Choices for Living Green

Choices for Living Green

From Gina C. Courbron

In this time of economic uncertainty and limited natural resources, it is more relevant than ever to live a green lifestyle. But what does that mean, and how can you apply it to your everyday life?

Examples of green living may be as simple as recycling, or as all-encompassing as building a new home with all eco-friendly materials. Here are some other choices you can make:

*Plan ahead for efficient recycling of paper, plastic, metal, glass and organic kitchen waste materials.

*Another way to save energy is by replacing burned out light bulbs with compact fluorescents. Although a bit more expensive initially, CFLs use substantially less energy than standard bulbs and last much longer.

*Updating the insulation in your home, as well as replacing old windows with double-paned ones can make a big difference in your energy bill.

*Installing insulated curtains will also help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

*Buy Energy Star appliances, induction cooking technology and surfaces that will be easy to clean and maintain.

*Choose cabinet and flooring materials using reclaimed wood and rapidly renewable sources like bamboo or sustainable hardwoods.

*When doing home improvements, look for paint, flooring, lumber and building materials that are eco-friendly and chemical-free. Examples include non-VOC paints, sustainable flooring and recycled wood products
